How to Calculate Time and a Half
Quick answer
To calculate time and a half, multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. Then multiply that overtime rate by your overtime hours. For example, $18 × 1.5 = $27 an hour, and 6 overtime hours × $27 = $162. A fast way to check: take half of your rate and add it back, so $18 + $9 = $27.
Worked exampleTime and a half on $22 an hour
- Regular rate: $22.00 an hour
- Half of the rate: $22.00 ÷ 2 = $11.00
- Time and a half: $22.00 + $11.00 = $33.00 an hour
- 8 overtime hours: 8 × $33.00 = $264.00
- Premium part only: 8 × $11.00 = $88.00
The premium is the "half" in time and a half. It matters for the 2025–2028 federal overtime deduction, which applies only to that part.

When Do You Get Time and a Half?
Quick answer
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, nonexempt employees get time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Federal law does not require it for weekends, holidays or nights by themselves. Some states, such as California, also require overtime after 8 hours in a day.
- Over 40 hours in a workweek: time and a half is required for nonexempt workers.
- Weekends and holidays: only if your employer’s policy or contract says so, or the hours push you over 40.
- Daily overtime: required in a few states, such as California after 8 hours.
- Exempt salaried jobs: no federal overtime, if pay and duties meet the exemption tests.
Time and a Half for Salaried Workers
Quick answer
Nonexempt salaried workers also earn time and a half. First, find the hourly rate: weekly salary ÷ the hours the salary covers. For a $1,000 weekly salary for 40 hours, that is $25 an hour. So time and a half is $37.50, and 5 overtime hours add $187.50.
Most salaried workers earning more than $684 a week whose duties are executive, administrative or professional are exempt. In that case, no overtime is owed. If you are unsure, our salary to hourly calculator helps you find your hourly equivalent.
Weekly Pay With Time and a Half

| Hours worked | $15 an hour | $20 an hour | $25 an hour | $30 an hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | $600.00 | $800.00 | $1,000.00 | $1,200.00 |

Holiday Pay, Double Time and Double Time and a Half
Many employers pay extra for holidays. However, federal law does not require it. Common policies include time and a half for working on a holiday, or double time and a half (2.5×) in some union contracts, which is holiday pay plus time and a half. Always check your handbook or contract.
Double time (2×) is required by law only in a few places, such as California after 12 hours in a day. Otherwise, it is a benefit your employer chooses to offer.
Is Time and a Half Taxed Differently?
Quick answer
No. Time and a half is taxed as ordinary wages, with federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and any state tax. However, from 2025 through 2028, you can deduct the premium part of qualifying overtime on your federal return, up to $12,500, or $25,000 if married filing jointly.
