How to Use the Illinois Paycheck Calculator

Quick answer

Enter your salary or hourly pay, your pay schedule and your federal W-4 details. Then add the allowances from lines 1 and 2 of your Form IL-W-4. The Illinois paycheck calculator applies the 4.95% state rate, Social Security and Medicare, and shows your take-home pay per check and per year.

  1. Enter your pay.

    Salary, or hourly with overtime.

  2. Choose your pay schedule.

    Weekly, biweekly, semimonthly or monthly.

  3. Copy your W-4.

Filing status, Step 2 and Step 3 credits.

  4. Copy your IL-W-4.

Line 1 counts you, your spouse and dependents. Line 2 adds one each if you or your spouse are 65 or older or blind.

  5. Add pre-tax deductions.

401(k), health premiums and HSA contributions lower both federal and Illinois tax.

If you never filed an IL-W-4, your employer may withhold Illinois tax on all of your pay with no allowances. As a result, you would get a slightly smaller check than shown here.

Illinois Income Tax Rate 2026

Quick answer

Illinois taxes wages at a flat 4.95%, whatever you earn. For withholding, each line 1 allowance on your IL-W-4 removes $2,925 from yearly wages in 2026, and each line 2 allowance removes $1,000. Bonuses are withheld at the same 4.95% rate.

flat, every income

$2,925

IL-W-4 allowance (line 1)

2026, up from $2,850

$0

Chicago city income tax

no city tax on wages

The formula is short. First, payroll takes your yearly wages, subtracts $2,925 for each basic allowance and $1,000 for each additional one, and multiplies the rest by 4.95%. Then it divides the result by your number of paychecks. Because of this, the Illinois paycheck calculator matches payroll to within a few cents.

Chicago Paycheck Calculator: Is There a City Income Tax?

Quick answer

No. Chicago and other Illinois cities do not tax wages, so a Chicago paycheck has the same taxes as one anywhere else in Illinois. That makes this Illinois paycheck calculator accurate for Chicago too. However, Chicago and Cook County set their own higher minimum wages.

Living in Chicago still costs more in other ways. Cook County’s sales tax is among the highest in the nation, and property taxes are high. So budget for those separately from your paycheck.

Illinois Paycheck Rules for Commuters and Retirees

Quick answer

Illinois has reciprocal agreements with Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan and Wisconsin. So if you live in one of those states and work in Illinois, you can file Form IL-W-5-NR and have your home state tax withheld instead. Meanwhile, Illinois does not tax most retirement income, such as pensions and Social Security.

For example, a Wisconsin resident who works in Chicago would normally ask the employer to stop Illinois withholding. However, the employer then needs to withhold Wisconsin tax instead, so the paycheck still has a state line. Indiana and Missouri residents get no such deal, so they pay Illinois tax and claim a credit at home.

Retirees with a part-time job still pay Illinois tax on their wages. Only the retirement income itself is exempt. So if you work part time in retirement, use the Illinois paycheck calculator for the job and leave your pension out.

How to Raise Your Illinois Take-Home Pay

Quick answer

Pre-tax benefits shrink your taxable pay. On a $75,000 Illinois salary, a 6% 401(k) puts $173.08 a paycheck into savings, yet take-home pay falls by only $126.43. Illinois follows the federal rule, so the 401(k) lowers both federal tax and the 4.95% state tax.

  1. Contribute to a 401(k) or 403(b), up to $24,500 in 2026.
  2. File an IL-W-4 that matches your household. Each line 1 allowance is worth about $145 a year.
  3. Use pre-tax health, HSA and commuter benefits.
  4. Remember that Illinois does not tax most retirement income, so saving now cuts state tax today and later.

Why Your Illinois Pay Stub May Differ

The Illinois paycheck calculator follows the state’s IL-700-T formula. Your real stub may still differ because of:

  1. A different number of IL-W-4 allowances, or no IL-W-4 on file.
  2. Living in Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan or Wisconsin, which have reciprocal agreements with Illinois.
  3. Health, dental or vision premiums and other benefits taken before tax.
  4. Extra withholding you asked for on your federal W-4 or state form.
  5. Garnishments, union dues or other after-tax deductions.
  6. High year-to-date wages, after which Social Security stops for the year.
