How to Use the New York Paycheck Calculator

Quick answer

Enter your salary or hourly wage, pick your pay schedule and set your federal W-4. Then add your Form IT-2104 filing status and allowances, and choose New York City or Yonkers if you live there. The New York paycheck calculator shows every tax and your net pay instantly.

  1. Enter your pay.

Salary, or hourly with overtime. Add tips or commissions per paycheck if you have them.

  2. Set your pay schedule.

    Weekly, biweekly, semimonthly or monthly.

  3. Copy your W-4.

Federal filing status, the Step 2 box and Step 3 credits.

  4. Copy your IT-2104.

New York uses its own form, with a filing status and a number of allowances.

  5. Choose your local tax.

Select New York City resident, Yonkers resident or Yonkers nonresident. Leave it blank elsewhere.

Without an IT-2104, your employer withholds as if you are single with zero allowances. That matches the starting settings of this New York paycheck calculator, so change them only if your form says otherwise.

New York State Income Tax Rate 2026

Quick answer

New York State taxes income at rates from 3.9% to 10.9% in 2026, after a cut to the five lowest brackets. Employers withhold using the NYS-50-T tables, which start at 3.9% and add a "recapture" at higher incomes. Bonuses and other supplemental pay are withheld at a flat 11.70%.

How New York withholding works

First, payroll annualizes your wages. Next, it subtracts a deduction of $7,400 (single or head of household) or $7,950 (married), plus $1,000 for each IT-2104 allowance. Then the table above gives the yearly tax, which is split across your paychecks.

Gross pay: $60,000 ÷ 26 = $2,307.69 per paycheck.

  1. Federal income tax: $193.08 (IRS percentage method, single).
  2. Social Security $143.08 and Medicare $33.46.
  3. New York State tax: $60,000 − $7,400 = $52,600. Then $586 + 5.4% × ($52,600 − $13,900) = $2,675.80 a year, or $102.92 per check.
  4. SDI: 0.5% of wages, capped at $0.60 a week, so $1.20 every two weeks.
  5. Paid Family Leave: 0.432% × $2,307.69 = $9.97.

Take-home pay: $1,823.99 per paycheck.

New York Bonus Tax Rate

Quick answer

New York withholds a flat 11.70% on bonuses and other supplemental pay. NYC residents add 4.25%, and Yonkers residents add 1.95975%. With 22% federal withholding and FICA, a $5,000 bonus outside NYC leaves about $2,910.90. However, that is only withholding, so your real tax is settled when you file your return.

Because 11.70% is far above most people’s actual New York rate, bonuses often lead to a state refund. To see the effect on a regular check instead, add the bonus as extra pay in the New York paycheck calculator.

Federal Taxes on Every New York Paycheck

How to Raise Your New York Take-Home Pay

Quick answer

Pre-tax benefits shrink your taxable pay. On a $75,000 New York salary, a 6% 401(k) puts $173.08 a paycheck into savings, yet take-home pay falls by only $125.65. New York lets 401(k) deferrals lower state and city tax too, so the saving is larger than in no-tax states.

  1. Contribute to a 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b), up to $24,500 in 2026.
  2. Update your IT-2104 when you marry, have a child or move in or out of NYC.
  3. Use commuter benefits for transit costs; they come out before tax.
  4. Check your withholding once a year with the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.

Why Your New York Pay Stub May Differ

The New York paycheck calculator follows the NYS-50-T tables. Still, your stub may differ for these reasons:

  1. A different IT-2104, or a move in or out of New York City during the year.
  2. Work in more than one state, which can trigger other states’ tax.
  3. Health, dental or vision premiums and other benefits taken before tax.
  4. Extra withholding you asked for on your federal W-4 or state form.
  5. Garnishments, union dues or other after-tax deductions.
  6. High year-to-date wages, after which Social Security stops for the year.
