How to Use the Hourly to Salary Calculator

Quick answer

Enter your hourly rate, the hours you work in a typical week and the weeks you are paid each year. The hourly to salary calculator multiplies them to get your annual salary. Next, choose your state and filing status to see your yearly take-home pay and your take-home pay every two weeks.

  1. Enter your hourly rate.

Use your base rate before any overtime or shift pay.

  2. Add your weekly hours.

Use 40 for full time, or your real average for part-time work.

  3. Set your paid weeks.

Keep 52 if you get paid time off. Lower it for unpaid weeks.

  4. Pick your state and status.

These set the taxes for your take-home pay.

  5. Compare pay periods.

See your pay per year, month, paycheck and week side by side.

How to Convert Hourly to Salary

Quick answer

To convert an hourly wage to an annual salary, multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours and then by 52 weeks. At 40 hours a week, simply multiply by 2,080. For example, $20 an hour × 2,080 = $41,600 a year, and $25 an hour × 2,080 = $52,000 a year, before taxes.

Worked exampleHourly to salary: $22.50 an hour

Say you earn $22.50 an hour and work 40 hours a week.

  1. Weekly pay: $22.50 × 40 = $900
  2. Annual salary: $900 × 52 = $46,800
  3. Monthly pay: $46,800 ÷ 12 = $3,900
  4. Every two weeks: $900 × 2 = $1,800

For a quick estimate, double your hourly rate and add three zeros. So $22.50 an hour is roughly $45,000 a year. The exact figure is a bit higher because a year has 2,080 work hours, not 2,000.

Minimum Wage as a Yearly Salary

Quick answer

The federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour equals $15,080 a year at 40 hours a week. Many states pay more. In 2026, California’s $16.90 equals $35,152 a year, New York City’s $17.00 equals $35,360, and Florida’s $15.00 (from September 30) equals $31,200.

Your state may also set a higher local minimum in some cities. The U.S. Department of Labor keeps a list of every state’s rate.

Part-Time Work and Overtime

Quick answer

For part-time work, use your real weekly hours. At $20 an hour, 30 hours a week is $31,200 a year and 20 hours is $20,800. Overtime adds more: five overtime hours a week at time and a half adds $7,800 a year at $20 an hour.

Here is the overtime math. First, $20 × 1.5 = $30 an hour for overtime. Then $30 × 5 hours × 52 weeks = $7,800. So a $20-an-hour worker with five overtime hours each week earns $49,400 a year. Our overtime calculator shows the after-tax value.

Hourly to Salary for Common Work Schedules

Quick answer

Not every full-time job is five 8-hour days. For example, three 12-hour shifts are 36 hours a week, so $40 an hour equals $74,880 a year. Four 10-hour days are still 40 hours, so the salary is the same as a regular week. Always enter your real weekly hours in the hourly to salary calculator.

Annual pay at $40 an hour for different schedules (52 weeks)
ScheduleHours a weekAnnual pay
Three 12-hour shifts36$74,880
Four 10-hour days40$83,200
Five 8-hour days40$83,200
Five 9-hour days (5 hours of overtime)45$98,800

Unpaid holidays also matter. If your employer does not pay for six holidays, you lose 48 hours of pay. At $20 an hour, that is $960 less than the 2,080-hour figure, so lower your paid weeks in the calculator to match.

Hourly vs. Salary: Which Pays More?

The same yearly number can mean different things. An hourly job pays for every hour, including overtime, but you usually lose pay for unpaid days. A salaried job pays the same each period, and it often includes paid time off and benefits.

Hourly pay

  • Paid for every hour, with 1.5× overtime after 40 hours.
  • Easy to see the value of extra shifts.

Salary

  • Usually a steady paycheck, even in slow weeks.
  • Paid time off and benefits are more common, but exempt jobs get no overtime.

To compare two offers fairly, convert both to the same unit. For example, use this hourly to salary calculator for the hourly job and our salary to hourly calculator for the salaried one.
