What Changed for North Carolina Paychecks in 2026
Quick answer
In 2026, North Carolina’s rate fell from 4.25% to 3.99%, and the withholding rate fell from 4.35% to 4.09%. The deductions stayed the same. As a result, a single worker earning $60,000 now has about $123 less state tax withheld over the year, or roughly $5 more in every biweekly paycheck.
Here is the math. First, take $60,000 minus the $12,750 deduction, which leaves $47,250. At the old 4.35% rate, that meant $2,055.38 a year withheld. At the new 4.09% rate, it means $1,932.53. So the difference is $122.85 for the year.
Because of this change, older North Carolina paycheck calculators that still use 4.25% or 4.35% overstate your state tax. In contrast, the North Carolina paycheck calculator on this page uses the 2026 NC-30 tables.
Two jobs or a working spouse
The NC-4 includes a worksheet for people with more than one job or a working spouse. If you skip it, too little tax may be withheld overall, because each employer applies the full deduction. So, if you have two incomes, fill in the worksheet and enter the result as allowances or extra withholding.

North Carolina Bonus Tax
Quick answer
North Carolina withholds 4.09% on bonuses and other supplemental pay, the same rate as regular wages. With 22% federal withholding and FICA, a $5,000 bonus leaves about $3,313.00. Because the actual tax rate is 3.99%, a small part may come back at tax time.

North Carolina vs. Other States
Quick answer
On a $60,000 salary, a single North Carolina worker keeps $48,466 in 2026. That beats Georgia ($48,144) and Michigan ($48,091), and it trails Texas and Florida by about $1,900. North Carolina’s steady rate cuts keep narrowing that gap.
How to Raise Your North Carolina Take-Home Pay
Quick answer
Pre-tax benefits shrink your taxable pay. On a $75,000 North Carolina salary, a 6% 401(k) puts $173.08 a paycheck into savings, yet take-home pay falls by only $128.00. North Carolina follows the federal rule, so a 401(k) lowers both federal tax and state withholding.
- File an updated NC-4. Each allowance lowers yearly withholding by about $102.
- Contribute to a 401(k) or 403(b), up to $24,500 in 2026.
- Use pre-tax health and HSA benefits.
- Expect a small state refund in many cases, because withholding runs at 4.09% while the rate is 3.99%.
Why Your North Carolina Pay Stub May Differ
Our North Carolina paycheck calculator uses the 2026 NC-30 formula. Your stub may still differ because of:
- An NC-4 with a different status or number of allowances.
- An employer that uses the wage-bracket tables instead of the formula, which can differ by a dollar or two.
- Health, dental or vision premiums and other benefits taken before tax.
- Extra withholding you asked for on your federal W-4 or state form.
- Garnishments, union dues or other after-tax deductions.
- High year-to-date wages, after which Social Security stops for the year.
